What to expect during your visit

Thank you for choosing our practice, welcome to the Pet Medical Milsons Point family!

To help you prepare for and understand what happens during your visit to our practice, we have prepared a general outline a typical veterinary appointment:

  1. Check-In: When you arrive at the veterinary clinic, you’ll meet with one of our friendly reception staff who will check your pet in. You may be asked to provide your pet’s medical history, any current concerns or symptoms, and your contact information. During this time, it is also important that you let our team know if your pet has special requirements (e.g. anxious, aggressive etc.) and we will do our best to accomodate your pet’s needs.

  2. Waiting Room: You and your pet can relax in our beautiful waiting area until your scheduled appointment time. We have created separate waiting areas for cats and dogs to minimise stress for your pets while we get ready to see you.

  3. Consultation Room: When it’s time for your pet’s consult, one of our veterinarians will conduct a thorough physical examination of your pet. A standard appointment runs for 20-minutes. During this time, our veterinarians will start by asking you questions about your pet’s health, behaviour, diet, and seek to understand any concerns you may have. This information helps the us understand your pet’s medical history.

  4. Physical Examination: A physical examination involves a comprehensive check of your pet physical health. We assess basic vital signs such as heart rate, respiration rate and temperature before moving on to other body systems such as eyes, ears, nose, mouth, teeth, skin, coat, and palpate the abdomen to assess overall health.

  5. Diagnostic Tests: Depending on your pet’s condition, we may recommend further diagnostic tests. These may include blood tests, urinalysis, faecal examinations, X-rays, ultrasound, or other specialised tests. Diagnostic tests help us gather more information to make an accurate diagnosis.

  6. Treatment or Procedure: If your pet requires immediate treatment or a specific procedure, we will discuss it with you. This can include administering medications, vaccinations, performing wound care, dentistry, or procedures. We will explain our recommendation, provide information about the procedure, potential risks, and answer any questions you have.

  7. Further Consultation: If the veterinarian needs to discuss the diagnostic test results or recommend additional treatments, they will provide you with the information and discuss the options available. They may prescribe medications, suggest dietary changes, or offer behavioral advice.

  8. Follow-up and Next Steps: We will provide instructions on any medications prescribed, post-treatment care, or lifestyle changes. We will also schedule any necessary follow-up appointments or recommend preventive care, such as vaccinations or regular check-ups.
