Urgent Care and After Hours Vet Services: What North Shore Pet Owners Need to Know

When your pet becomes ill or injured outside of regular hours, knowing where to turn and what to do can make a real difference. This page explains what urgent care and after-hours veterinary services are available for cats and dogs on Sydney’s North Shore, and how to get your pet the right help quickly.

After Hours and Emergency Veterinary Care in Sydney’s Lower North Shore

Veterinary emergencies rarely happen at convenient times. If your dog or cat is unwell, injured, or showing signs of distress outside of regular clinic hours, it is important to know where to turn and what to do. Pet Medical Milsons Point provides pet care services and can advise you on the best course of action for your pet’s situation.

Some of the diagnostics include:

  • Blood tests
  • Diagnostic imaging (X-rays and ultrasound)
  • Electrocardiography (If required)

Our team will strive to keep you informed throughout the process and depending on your pet’s needs, we will guide you through the appropriate next steps to provide your pet with the appropriate care they require.

If you require care for your pet after hours, please call SASH on 9889 0289 or North Shore Emergency Clinic on 9436 4884.

Pet Medical Milsons Point: Urgent Care During Opening Hours

Pet Medical Milsons Point provides urgent care services for cats and dogs during our opening hours. If your pet requires same-day attention for an acute illness or injury, whether that is a sudden change in behaviour, a suspected toxic ingestion, a wound, respiratory distress, or a rapid deterioration in an existing condition, please call us immediately so we can prepare for your arrival.

Our clinic is equipped with advanced on-site diagnostics including digital X-ray, ultrasound, and in-house pathology, which allows us to assess and begin treating urgent cases without delays associated with referrals to external facilities.

We serve pets from across the North Shore, including Milsons Point, Crows Nest, North Sydney, Cammeray, Neutral Bay, Artarmon, St Leonards, Cremorne, Kirribilli, and Waverton

What Counts as a Veterinary Emergency?

The following signs require urgent veterinary attention. If your pet is showing any of these symptoms, call us immediately or, outside our hours, proceed directly to an after-hours emergency veterinary hospital:

  • Difficulty breathing, laboured breathing, or rapid shallow breathing
  • Collapse, sudden inability to stand, or extreme weakness
  • Suspected poisoning or toxic ingestion (plants, medications, human food, rodenticide, snail bait, or other chemicals)
  • Uncontrolled bleeding that does not stop within a few minutes with gentle pressure
  • Seizures, convulsions, or loss of consciousness
  • Suspected broken bones or severe injuries from trauma such as being hit by a vehicle
  • Extreme abdominal distension (bloat) in dogs. This is always a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate treatment
  • Cats that are straining to urinate or producing no urine. A urinary blockage in a male cat is a rapidly life-threatening condition
  • Suspected snake or spider bite
  • Eye injuries or sudden changes in vision
  • Repeated vomiting or diarrhoea with blood
  • Pale, white, grey, or blue-tinged gums
  • Unresponsiveness or severe changes in consciousness

After Hours Veterinary Care: What Are Your Options?

If your pet requires veterinary attention outside of our clinic’s regular opening hours, there are options available to pet owners.

Emergency Referral Hospitals

For life-threatening emergencies, we maintain referral relationships with specialist emergency veterinary hospitals in Sydney that provide 24-hour care, like SASH and North Shore Animal Hospital.

How to Prepare for a Pet Emergency

Know Your Vet’s Number

Save Pet Medical Milsons Point’s phone number in your phone so you can reach us quickly during our opening hours.

Know Your Nearest After-Hours Emergency Clinic

Ask us at your next visit and save the number. Having it ready before an emergency removes a stressful step when time matters.

Keep Your Pet’s Medical History Accessible

If you need to visit an after-hours facility, bring or be ready to describe your pet’s vaccination history, current medications, known allergies, and any recent illnesses or procedures.

Keep Your Pet Calm During Transport

A frightened or injured animal may behave unpredictably. Wrap cats gently in a towel and place them in a carrier. For dogs, move them as calmly as possible and avoid unnecessary manipulation of suspected injury sites.

Do Not Induce Vomiting Without Advice

If your pet has swallowed something potentially toxic, do not attempt to induce vomiting without first speaking to a vet or a poison helpline. Some substances cause more damage coming back up.

Our Commitment to Urgent Care on the North Shore

At Pet Medical Milsons Point, we believe that access to high-quality urgent care should not require a long drive or a stressful referral process. We are committed to providing prompt, calm, and expert assessment for pets that need urgent attention during our opening hours, and to making sure every pet owner on the North Shore knows exactly where to turn at any hour.

If you are unsure whether your pet’s condition requires immediate attention, call us. Our team would far rather reassure you that things are fine than have you wait when something serious is developing.

“We understand that emergencies happen and will always be here for you and your pet.”

Frequently Asked Questions About After Hours Vet and Urgent Care

Breathing trouble, collapse, uncontrolled bleeding, repeated vomiting, severe pain, seizures, heatstroke, suspected poisoning, difficulty urinating, and sudden bloating are all urgent. If you’re unsure, call a vet.

Call first if you can. Keep your pet warm and calm, avoid food unless advised, and bring any packaging (e.g., toxin/medication) with you.

We provide urgent care support for many emergencies during our opening hours. If your pet requires 24/7 monitoring, or if we are closed, SASH will be available to see your pet outside of our opening hours.

Immediately. Some toxins act quickly, and delays can be dangerous. Call a vet straight away and bring the packaging if you have it.

For life-threatening emergencies, proceed directly to the nearest 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital while calling ahead to alert them you are on your way.

If you are unsure whether your pet’s condition is an emergency, the safest approach is always to seek professional advice. Call our clinic and describe what you are observing. Our team can help you determine whether your pet needs to be seen immediately or whether careful monitoring at home is appropriate. Signs like difficulty breathing, collapse, seizures, or suspected poisoning should always be treated as emergencies.

Yes. We do our best to accommodate urgent and same-day appointments during clinic hours for pets that need prompt attention. Please call us as early in the day as possible if you believe your pet requires urgent care, and our team will fit you in as quickly as we can.

Pet Medical provides urgent care services during our opening hours. For genuine medical emergencies outside our hours, we direct pet owners to the appropriate 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital on the North Shore.

Call us immediately if we are open, or proceed directly to a 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital if we are closed. Do not attempt to induce vomiting without professional guidance, as this can be harmful depending on what was ingested. If you know what your pet has swallowed, bring the packaging with you.

We recommend calling ahead if possible so we can prepare for your arrival and minimise your waiting time. In a genuine emergency, come straight in and let our reception team know immediately upon arrival that your pet requires urgent attention.
